Boundaries impact every area of our lives - our relationships, careers, our health - all of it. But for some of us kind souls, boundaries can feel harsh and sometimes mean. Why would we want to set boundaries if they feel so loathsome? They don’t have to be. We can do boundaries kindly, in ways that honor and respect what we need, without disregarding or undermining the needs of others. My belief is that boundaries done with respect and kindness are the most effective ones, and there’s substantial neuroscience that supports this.
You might be surprised to find that boundary work is all about relationships: the relationship we have with ourselves, with others, and with our reality. One of the best kept secrets about boundaries is that when we begin to deepen our boundary work, we increase our self-worth and we growth in our capacity to live a more fulfilling life and enjoy our relationships much more. That sounds pretty kind to me.
